What Is the Difference Between Sensitive Gums and Sensitive Teeth?

When the daily routine starts getting affected by things such as drinking hot or cold beverages, having lunch, or brushing your teeth becomes uncomfortable and painful, it is time for you to pay attention to the source of your dental problem. You might be suffering from gum sensitivity or tooth sensitivity. Because the symptoms of both can be similar, there can be difficulty in identifying the two issues.

Following are a few indicators to recognize if you are suffering from either gum sensitivity or tooth sensitivity.

  • Tooth Sensitivity

If you find yourself slightly grimacing after having an ice cold drink, there are chances that you have tooth sensitivity. The symptoms of sensitive teeth are – pain in the teeth because of receding gums, worn tooth enamel, loose fillings, or gum disease. Because of sensitive teeth, you will find it difficult to enjoy hot, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.

  • Gum Sensitivity

You may notice the sensitivity of your gums, when you feel an uneasy, uncomfortable sensation or irritation in the bottom and/or top gum line. You may have sensitive gums due to poor oral hygiene, gingivitis, tobacco consumption, and at times, even due to pregnancy. If you notice gum sensitivity, bleeding gums, bad breath, then you may have gingivitis.

  • What Can You Do?

Both dental issues are uncomfortable, but both can be treated and prevented before either of the two reaches the stage that would require a serious dental trip. To avoid sensitivity of teeth and/or gums, you need to practice and maintain good dental health and this can be done by brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and maintaining routine dental checkups.
